Identifont — On-line font identifier

Identifont uses an expert system to enable an untrained user to identify a typeface.

With several thousand typefaces in common use, matching an existing sample or selecting an appropriate typeface for a piece of work can involve hours of trial and error, searching through type catalogues.

Identifont identifies a typeface by asking a series of simple questions, using an expert system that adapts its questions to find the answer in the shortest possible number of steps. For example it can identify a typical typeface, such as Gill Sans, in just 10 questions. The system is being expanded on a monthly basis to incorporate new typefaces as they are released.

The Identifont technology has also been licensed to Linotype Library, for use as a hosted service on their Web site.
